Tsunami Poem

Boundless Benevolence

Mother, most gracious fountain of endless energy

You’re Nature, renewing itself in the form of Fire, Water, Wind, Earth and Ether

Mother, most gracious I salute you!

You, the full moon drawing patterns on our compound

The gentle rain and the surging sea are my parents

You my mother, I your child

This life’s your boon, my sole force

My mind is drenched with thy love

Thoughts of you sway my dreams

The morning sky your eyes compassionate

The hot sun and the cold windy rain

Are but manifestations of thy infinite care for us

Your radiant glance and your loving closeness

Your days and your nights the nourishing sap coursing through the roots

Thoughts of you sway my dreams

The days change like the ceaseless surge of waves

The spark lights the wick’ the lamp sheds light
Thoughts of you sway my dreams

Tamil Original: N. Sivasithamparam (2005) Translation: S. Pathmanathan Set to music as part of the post-tsunami healing efforts. Tamil poem available Here. Recorded song available Here.

In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, many were focused on the destructive side of Mother Nature. Fishermen were afraid to return to sea. As part of the post-tsunami recovery work, this song was composed and recorded to help people see things in a balanced way and move forward. The song was conceptualised by Kuzhanthai Shanmugalingam (with team inputs), penned by Mr. N. Sivasithamparam, and its melody was composed by Thavanathan Robert. It was recorded at Sapthami Kalaiyagam, and the music was arranged, recorded, and balanced by Mr. G. Murali. Robert et al. sang the song.
